Student’s creativity flourishes at Central Michigan University

CMU seniors Marta Kalumbala, Mikayla Dixon and Diana Malla created a short animation film for the original screenplay The Sand Ryder Souk Fight.

The story is centered on a bounty hunter named Azare who is the character saving Sarai. The animation is featured in Africa, and it’s a futuristic world. The film is about two and a half minutes long, not including the credits.

Azare the bounty hunter has to find Sarai, while she spends most of her time in the Sahra. Azare is more reserved and described by the team as stoic. Sarai is the women Azare has been charged to find, and she is also described as naive and a bit of a princess. The two go on an adventure together as Azare must save the kidnapped women.

Kalumbala started working on the story about two years ago for another class. They have since expanded on the main character, Azare’s storyline. This year, the team worked together to create the animation from characters and a setting that Kalumbula had already created.

Kalumbula started to recruit Malla and then eventually Dixon joined the team. All three students are animation majors.

“We’ve been classmates throughout all our animation courses. Last spring me and Diana worked on a PSA and that was when I knew I had to work with Diana again, so I recruited her to help with this,” said Kalumbula.

Malla stated that at first she focused on concepts for the background and characters, which is 3D. Kalumbala then took these drawings and made them animations. Malla stated that she enjoyed the designing of the characters as she normally focuses on the environment.

“I just drew out what they would look like and what the world around them would look like,” said Malla. “I don’t know how she did it but she brought them to life, so they look exactly like what I drew, so I think that’s cool.”

Dixon stated that she worked on a turn around bit for the production. A turn around bit shows multiple sides and dimensions to to the characters. With the work Kalumbula had done for the characters and the production, Dixon didn’t find this task to be too difficult.

“It was one of my favorite bits to do out of this entire production,” said Dixon.

One of the challenges the team faced was making sure their work was completed on time. The team did manage to finish their assignments before the due dates. Kalumbula had stated that they did not know if the team would finish after spring break, but that they pulled through.

Another challenge was working with new computers that would shut down frequently.

“The 3D side rendering out the backgrounds was difficult because like our new computers kept crashing all the time and it was hard to get those rendered out,” said Kalumbula.

The team enjoyed seeing the final product of their work. It was one of the most rewarding parts for Kalumbula and Dixon.

“For me I really like the pre-production part which is like the designing and story that we made last semester, but this semester I really liked when I finished coloring and compositing and seeing it all come together,” said Kalumbula.

The animation department is hosting a showcase for the students on Tuesday, May 5. There will be food and drinks, and a screening of all the student’s films. In previous years, the department handed out awards for the students but have since stopped doing so.

A little bit of this, and a little bit of that.

What does a normal shift at the Presentation Skills Center look like? Senior Giavanna Gullo gives insight into what the PSC looks like for consultants. The conclusion: a little bit of working, maybe some homework and lots of mischief.

Gia is a lead consultant and is on the third year with this title. Recently, the PSC consultants just took a trip to Rochester, New York. Can you guess what the consultants did? Consultant’s spoke on panels, networked, collaborated and lots of tomfoolery.

Troy Miller is also a lead consultant at the PSC. Miller and Gullo are in a relationship with one another (if it were not obvious from the video). The pair met at the PSC and developed a wonderful, playful and mature relationships.

From spinning around in chairs, to chatting with coworkers, a shift at the PSC looks a little different every day. But one thing that always remains is the humor and mischief that Gullo gets herself into.

It’s almost summer 2026, but some are still in Brat summer of 2024.

Summer is right around the corner, the sunshine, good memories and tan lines are just a month away. No more school or stress, just friends and music. Summer 2026 has high expectations, but it will never be Brat summer ever again.

Two summers ago, Charli XCX released her hit album, Brat. Brat was released June 7, 2024, and sparked a new cultural phenomenon. Brat summer was created and ruled the months of June, July and August.

Not only did Charli XCX release her solo album Brat but she also collaborated with many other artists to create her second Brat album. “Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat” is an addition to her main album that features dozens of other artists.

Lorde, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Troye Sivan and more are some of the top featured artists on this album.

Brat was about more than just the music; it was a feeling. Brat inspired listeners to let loose and fostered a girlhood environment.

Charli XCX found inspiration from this album from her time as a performer at raves in London. This being her sixth album, she took inspiration from the nightlife scene, in a more vulnerable way.

Brat was most popular in the UK, Australia, Croatia, Ireland and New Zealand. Charlotte Emma Aitchinson (Charli XCX) was born in 1992 in Cambridge, United Kingdom.

Charli XCX has been making hit songs for years now, but Brat opened a new door for her. Brat represents the new age of women, independent, free and ready to have fun.

Brat was a key staple for Kamala Harris’s campaign during the fall of 2024. The Harris Waltz campaign included stickers that said, “Kamala is so brat.”

The song “Apple” on Brat became a viral TikTok song, with a dance included. Some songs from this album have been featured in movies. For example, “Everything is Romantic” was featured in the Wuthering Heights film in 2026.

Guess featuring Billie Eilish was the most streamed song at 240 million streams.

Brat won a handful of awards at the 67th Grammy’s. Brat was nominated for nine Grammy’s and took home three.

The album Brat was about more than just the music. It captured the specific vibe of the time and highlighted a new era of pop music. Charli XCX has gone on to create more songs and even got married a few months ago.

Although summer 2026 will be a great time, Brat summer will always hold a special memory for those who participated.

Class Assignment with Corey Hogue

Corey Hogue, a senior at CMU poses for a class assignment. Amidst the cold weather, Corey did decide to take his jacket off. Me and Corey talked about potential locations for this shoot. We landed on the pond across from the UC that is next to the library. The weather was okay, pretty chilly and cloudy. We made the most of it and got some great photos of one another, while swapping stories about journalism.

Superbowl Sunday- who cares about football when Bad Bunny is performing tonight.

Hello! Thank you for clicking on my lifestyle blog. There is truthfully nothing to extraordinary about my life. I am a college student (who is not graduating in 4 years) and I am still trying to find a job and internship. Which is the bane of my existence, considering I have no idea what I really want to do. However, I am not going to stress about the rest of my life right now, I have homework and a blog writing assignment that is overdue for my digital journalism class.

I think one of the most pivotal moments in my life was when I studied abroad. I took an art, fashion, food and wine journalism class in Florence, Italy where I studied. In this class, we learned how to write like a critic. Now, this was difficult for me as a reporter- I follow the facts and try to be as objective as possible. I kept thinking, why does my opinion matter? I am not a chef, nor a designer and for sure not an artist. Therefore, my blog is subjective, and I shall give my opinion, but understand that it is just that.

My opinion of the day is that The Superbowl would not be nearly as popular if the Halftime show didn’t exist. I mean think about it, what are we all subconsciously waiting for…the Halftime show! There have been some extremely talented artists who have given great performances. Some of my favorites include Lady Gaga, The Weekend and Katy Perry. I am looking forward to Bad Bunny’s performance and could not be more thrilled to see him on stage. Especially given the current political climate and unrest happening in the U.S., representation matters, and people’s voices should never be silenced. Though I do not know much Spanish, I will for sure be dancing along! I even got some chips and dip for the Superbowl party I am attending. I can’t wait to celebrate a night of football, food, friends and drinks. What could be more American? Maybe if Uncle Sam himself showed up, it would be the true American Dream! But I will settle for a group of 20 something year old girls who are looking for an excuse to drink together on a Sunday night.
